Online piracy: A different type of theft

Many people are quick to claim they are law-abiding citizens. Ironically, these same people often ignore the law when it suits them: they speed on the highway, ignore red traffic lights, buy counterfeit rugby jerseys from street vendors and illegally stream sports and movies through various illegal apps and devices. But what truly sets them apart from those committing more serious crimes? In essence, they are breaking the law and we can label them as thieves.

The concept of paying for entertainment content feels like a luxury that many living in Africa cannot afford. When families prioritise putting food on the table, streaming the latest movie or sports match legally often seems out of reach. It is not an entirely unreasonable perception: premium content is a luxury item in many ways. But over the years, content platforms have introduced pricing innovations to cater to most budgets.
