Policing is an increasingly complex task, with manpower and resource shortages and increasing levels of violent crime adding strain on law enforcement agencies. In response, drones are emerging as a valuable policing tool, helping law enforcement officers manage some
routine but demanding situations.
Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), commonly referred to as drones, play an increasingly essential role in various tactical and emergency tasks. Drones are aircraft without pilots on board and can either be piloted manually from the ground or operate autonomously. Although some drones come with standard cameras, others have specialised equipment such as powerful zoom lenses, thermal sensors, lights and speakers (Fitzsimmons, 2023 and SAPS, 2026).
Drones offer an affordable way to strengthen emergency response and improve decision-making. They provide live aerial footage feeding into command centres, offer real-time situational awareness, allowing law enforcement officers to evaluate ongoing events before allocating any resources.
