Behind the global trade lies an environmental cost measured in rising carbon emissions, depleting water supplies, toxic pollution and the destruction of ecosystems. These impacts extend far beyond production sites, threatening biodiversity and creating consequences that could shape the future of life on Earth.<\/p><p>The impact of the illegal drug trade goes much deeper than crime and public health and reaches into the realms of ecosystems and local communities. According to the UNODC (2022), the link between the environment and illegal drugs may be considered from two interrelated perspectives: the production and use of drugs and the policy tools used to regulate their activity. Combined, both perspectives impact the environment in five ways: air pollution; deforestation; energy consumption; soil pollution and degradation; and water pollution and depletion.<\/p><p>Globally, however, illicit drug cultivation remains small compared to legal agricultural industries. In 2021, 246 800 hectares of land were used for growing opium poppy (Papaver), while coca production used approximately 234 000 hectares of land in 2020. A total of almost half a million hectares of land (UNODC, 2022). In comparison, land for agricultural use is estimated at 1.6 billion hectares, meaning that production of illicit crops is about 3000 times smaller than agriculture (FAO, 2021 and UNODC, 2022).<\/p><p>******************************<\/p><p>[This is only an extract of an article published in Servamus: September 2026.
